External Partnerships

Ways to get involved with the Finance Department

  • Lunch & Learns
    • Usually around noon on a Mon-Thurs
    • Dean’s Conference Room for presentation (25 student capacity)
    • Partner buys pizza
    • Lunch & networking
    • Partner may specify which COB majors are to be included
  • Coffee & Cupcakes / Coffee & Crullers
    • Afternoon/morning on a Mon-Thurs
    • Dean’s Conference Room for presentation (25 student capacity)
    • Partner buys cupcakes/donuts (whichever are appropriate) & a box of K-cups
    • Partner may specify which COB majors are to be included
  • Classroom Visits
    • Partner’s area is matched with a junior/senior level class, if available
    • With faculty permission, partner representative(s) may visit the class to present on relevant topic (presentation times range from 20-75 minutes)
  • Informational Evenings
    • Early evening on a Mon-Thurs
    • We reserve a tiered classroom for presentation (100 student capacity)
    • Partner buys pizza
    • Food & networking follow the presentation in the COB atrium
    • Partner may specify which COB majors are to be included
  • Student Organization Involvement
    • Guest speaker or corporate sponsor of an event
    • Financial Management Association (FMA) meets 7-8pm on Thursdays
    • FMA hosts a Meet the Firm night, a mocktail (i.e., a mock cocktail) event, and a job shadowing day
  • Site Visit
    • Partner hosts a group of students at their facility for a morning/afternoon
    • Showcase a behind the scenes look
    • Partner may provide onsite lunch
    • Partner may cover transportation (i.e., NIU van/bus rental)
  • Fridays with Finance
    • Partner buys Panera boxed lunches and meets on a Friday around noon in the Department’s conference room with various members of the Finance faculty & advising team
    • A means of (a) discussing curricular alignment with partner’s needs (overview of the content taught in the finance classes offered, skills/subject areas desired by the partner), and (b) showcasing faculty research
  • Internship / Job Placement Partner
    • Ongoing commitment to hire one or more NIU Finance majors for an internship/full time job each yearPromoted on the NIU Finance website and other marketing material

  • Scholarships
    • Partner may specify parameters (e.g., recipient’s area of interest, GPA, etc.)
  • Additional Financial Support
    • Partner may specify parameters (e.g., funding student travel to conferences, technology purchases, faculty research; sponsoring the Finance Department Alumni Networking evening events or a table at the College of Business Alumni Luncheon, etc.)
  • Many external partnerships involve a variety of the above options.

Promotion

  • We create a flyer which is...
    • Announced in all finance classes
    • Posted on the Finance Department’s glass door/announcement area in front of the suite (paper copy)
    • Posted on the NIU Finance Department Facebook page
    • Posted on the College of Business’s announcement monitors around the building
    • Email blasted to Finance majors/minors/certificates
  • The event is included on the College of Business’s Passport website (a COB initiative aimed at broadening students' business perspective and enhance their marketability in the job market)

Sponsoring one of the above events will also be accompanied by:

  • A free table in the College of Business atrium
    • Partner representatives man a table in the COB atrium (we provide the table, they provide the tablecloth/decorations/flyers)
    • 1 day (morning/afternoon/all day?) during the current semester (we recommend Mon-Thurs)
    • A way to increase visibility & reach students from across majors
