For years, the NIU student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management has been an active and successful chapter. Our chapter has won numerous awards from the national organization over the last decade, including many Superior Merit Awards, given to the highest achieving chapters.
Both students and human resource professionals benefit from the activities and involvement with our student chapter.
For HR Students: Involvement in a professional association gives you an opportunity to identify important issues in the HR field today. SHRM also provides a forum for development of such professional skills as networking, interpersonal communication, and business etiquette. Our many activities provide information and insight to the HR field - activities which include speakers, tours, shadow days, mentoring from professionals, mock interviews, conferences, and attending professional chapter meetings. Some members choose to pursue leadership opportunities in the chapter, which gives them additional opportunities for personal and professional development. Most importantly, perhaps, involvement in SHRM provides students with a "realistic job preview" of work in the HR field, which allows students to jump into their careers with enthusiasm and a head start.
For Professionals: Interaction with our chapter has given professionals an opportunity to participate in the development of future entrants, and possibly leaders, in the HR field. Many of the professionals who have helped our chapter report that their involvement has contributed to their own personal and professional development and has provided them with personal satisfaction. Furthermore, many of our students have gone on to serve in internships or to take full-time jobs with professionals that have been involved in our chapter's activities - a good example of a win-win relationship.
I invite students and professionals who access this page to contact me (see my address, phone and e-mail link below) to find out more about our student SHRM chapter. I consider my involvement in the student chapter and my involvement in national and local professional SHRM activities to be the source of some of the most enjoyable moments of my professional life.
A note to alumni that may access this page: If you are an alumnus of our chapter, or our HR program here at NIU, please keep in touch. Let me know where you are and what you are doing (see address, phone and e-mail link below). We have occasional activities designed for alumni and hope to start an HR alumni newsletter soon. Also, let me know if you'd be interested in helping out our chapter in any way.
