Professor Aleksandra “Ally” B. Zimmerman, Ph.D., CPA (Ohio), CMA, ABV joined the NIU Department of Accountancy faculty in June, 2016. Ally earned her Ph.D. in management (accounting) from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in May 2012. Prior to earning her Ph.D., Ally worked full time for three and half years in public accounting for the regional firm HW&Co., CPAs and Advisors in Beachwood, OH. She worked as a staff auditor for approximately two years and as a tax, employee benefit plan compliance and business valuation senior for about a year and half. She became a licensed CPA in Ohio in 2009, an ABV in 2011 and a CMA in 2015. Ally has also had internships in IT auditing (PwC), bank internal auditing (PNC Bank) and tax (various firms). Ally earned her Masters of Science in accounting from Kent State University in May, 2012 and Bachelor of Science degree in business administration (accounting) from John Carroll University in January, 2009.
Her research interests include audit quality, audit pricing, audit market composition, auditor judgment and decision making and the labor markets for auditors and also accounting faculty. Her dissertation, entitled “Does the Audit Market Price Big 4 Experience in Non‐Big 4 Firms?” received the 2016 AAA (American Accounting Association)/Grant Thornton Doctoral Dissertation Award and the 2015 Best Paper Award by a Doctoral Student from the AAA Mid‐Atlantic Region Meeting. Ally’s other research has also won the 2015 Best Doctoral Student Manuscript Award and the 2014 Teaching and Learning Curriculum Section Best Paper Runner‐Up Award from the AAA Ohio Region.
Her research has been published in the Journal of Accounting Education, Accounting Historians Journal, Research in Accounting Regulation and Managerial Auditing Journal. Her research has been presented at national and international accounting research conferences including the 2016 International Symposium on Audit Research (ISAR) in Singapore, 2016 Deloitte/University of Kansas Audit Symposium, 2015 ISAR in Boston, 2013‐2016 American Accounting Association Annual Meetings, 2013‐2016 Ohio Region Meetings and 2015 Mid‐Atlantic Region Meeting.
Ally has taught survey of accounting, financial (intermediate) accounting and assurance services/audit courses. She is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, American Accounting Association, AICPA, IMA, Illinois Society of CPAs and Ohio Society of CPAs. In her spare time, she enjoys running, spending time outdoors, watching movies, traveling, and spending time with her son Alex and husband Eric. Ally also speaks native Russian and some Spanish.
